SHIELDWALL - a finely balanced game of military strategy

Gregory Clouter, an enthusiast of medieval and Celtic history, devised Shieldwall after two years' planning and development from his home in Cornwall. The game is a handcrafted item, from the classically designed 88 square chequer board to the 48 intricately carved Norman figurines in marble and ivory effect.  Shieldwall was developed in the same genre of chess or draughts; the rules are easy to learn and the strategy of the game increases to a complex yet challenging level during game-play.

The game is based on the Battle of Hastings and the importance of the collapse of the Saxon Shieldwall during the fight between the Saxons and the Normans. The objective of the game is to capture the most possible spaces on the opponent's flank - each player has to delicately balance the ability to defend and attack. Attacking pieces can only operate in pairs and the defending pieces can be re-formed into stringer units called shieldwalls. Greg's workshop is based in Penzance, Cornwall and he is concentrating on building his interests more locally in this county as well as other SW English counties.

The launch of his new website has brought a lot of global interest from as far away as the USA and Japan.  From the website, you can read more information about the game, rules, movement of pieces, witness a "game in action" and an online order procedure. The games are handmade to order so delivery can be between 28 - 35 days from when the order has been placed.
