A
WAB Scenario
It is the intention of English
Computer Wargames, to temporarily abandon their infernal machines, shake off the
dust from their trusty dice and stage a wargame of the Battle of Mons Badonicus,
using Warhammer, Ancient Battles (WAB). The game will take place at the
forthcoming Colours
Wargames Show at Newbury Race Course on the 9th-10th
September, using 25/28mm figures.
Mons Badonicus, or Mount Badon must
be the most written about battle of Dark Age Britain, but we still don’t know
for sure where, or even when, it was. Nor do we know precisely who took part.
(see: http//.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle
of Mons Badonicus) ECW’s Mons Badonicus is not based on the Cornwell Warlord
series, but on the historical work of John Haldon, John Morris, Guy Halsall and
others, and on several other works of Arthurian fiction.
The most popular sites for Mons
Badonicus are all in the South West, and most are centred on a hill fort. We
take the view that a late 5th century date is more likely than the 6th
century possibilities, so the most likely leader of the Anglo-Saxons (or
English) is Aella, King of the
Constantine
has mobilised the full strength of Dumnonia to relieve the fort and repel the
invading Saxons. The day before the battle, he lies at Durnovaria, 19 miles
South-West of Badon.
It’s envisaged that there will be
roles in the game for three to four players on each side and that we will play
fresh games on each of the show’s two days. At the moment, we have two Saxon
and two British players, so we would invite any of the Forum’s readers to join
us for either one, or both of the games. We probably have enough British
figures, but are scraping the barrel to find sufficient Saxons, so anyone who
can turn up to play, or just to watch, who can also provide any number of
suitable figures would be most welcome.
If you’re interested in taking part, or may be able to help us out with additional figures, either Saxons, (don’t have to be strictly Saxons, any similar Dark Ages infantry considered) or Britons; please drop me a line at:
