Ground Zero Games

It is difficult sometimes to find anything to say about products sent for review, apart from “clean casting”, accurate proportions etc etc. The wargamers has become fare more discerning than say 10 years ago, and the manufacturers have responded by producing figures of a consistently high standard, albeit with the occasional individual eccentricities.

It is a pleasure then the receive a range of figures that make close study a joy, and make you want to reach for your paintbrush!

Ground Zero games provided a small sample of their fantasy and science fiction ranges for review. And what a range they produce beginning with miniature fleets of space battlecruisers, through robots, scantily clad collectibles, to gutsy space marines.

The space ships are excellent models each highly detailed and deeply engraved, crying out for a careful paint job. The UNSC Escort Carrier (FT1117, £4), comes in three parts, which slotted easily and tightly together with little cleaning necessary. The resulting model standing proud on its movement stand, looks suitably heavy and menacing.

The FCT Austin Class DD, (FT1405, £2.50) is a neat, sleek one piece casting carrying four heavy thrust engines and an impressive weapons array.

There have been additions to the 25mm New Anglian marines range. These are tough space marines, not unlike those featured in “Space, Above and Beyond”, or “Starship Troopers”. These guys mean business, featuring heavily armed troops in a variety of poses including snipers and missile launchers lying prone. The castings are crisp and clear, but some filing was necessary to level the bases ready for mounting. These space heroes are available at £1 each.

Finally, my favourites, The Limpopo Pygmies from Eureka! I love these figures, they are just so full of character. These miniature warriors, in a 25mm scale, would grace any African Adventure game or, as my son insists, a range of fantasy possibilities. There are 10 figures available in the range including a chief with a huge feather plume, witchdoctor, and club carrying female warrior. Because of their diminutive appearance the price of £1 may seem a tad excessive, but then again they are so attractive that the cost can be justified.
