Cossacks

Cossacks is a real-time strategy game by CDV Software.  Graphically stunning, it is complex but satisfying to play.  It supports both single player versus the computer games and multiplayer games over the internet or LAN.  In single player mode, there is a choice of single missions, campaigns which are linked sequences of scenarios where the player must successfully complete each one before progressing to the next, and random map games where the player chooses a map type such as islands or continents and the number and nationality of participants.  In multiplayer mode, there is the choice of deathmatch or historical battle.

Set in the 17th and 18th Centuries, players have 16 nations to choose from, ranging from Algeria to the Ukraine.  Each nation has different characteristics and options available to it – for example the Ukraine has only Cossacks as troop types and has no option for fortifications, so an aggressive strategy is called for!

The player has to manage and develop the economy of the chosen nation while also defending themselves and developing their military capacity.  There are six commodities to manage – food, wood, stone, gold, iron and coal.  Each is important for different activities, but running out of food and gold can be catastrophic!

The game builds on the playing style established by Age of Empires, providing a visual treat while requiring the player to plan and react quickly.  While the game interface is not difficult, it calls for an investment of time to learn to play the game effectively.  This is not a game that you’re going to play once and get bored with.
