Polish Renaissance.

The problem that I have with Bachus's models is that they are just so damned tempting. I stopped playing Renaissance games about 15 years ago, and sold all my 25mm armies. Then looking over Peter's excellent English Civil War range I am tempted to start a new project building up both sides at Marston Moor. Now he has released a range of Poles that has got me seriously thinking about making a further investment.... if I can find a way of doing it without my ever loving dearest finding out!

The Poles of the Renaissance period fought wars at various times with all their neighbours, and far from being the victims of military aggression they were a proud and skilled military race who were quite happy engaging in their own expansionist policies. The army is a fascinating transitional mix of regular standing forces, feudal levies and tribal allies.

The winged hussars are certainly one the most famous military units of the period. The hussars, far from being the light cavalry the name would imply in a later period, were heavy, lance armed cavalry fully or three quarter armoured, who wore a light wooden frame decorated with eagle feathers on their back. This produced a strange whistling sound as they rode adding a psychological element to their charge......beyond the sight of their steel tipped lancers. A Bit like C17th Stukas!

Other cavalry included wingless hussars, feudal mailed cavalry or pancerni, Tartar and Cossack allies as well as mercenary horse such as reiter. The infantry were based around a regular core of musketeers who instead of the usual rest for the weapon also carried a huge berdische axe. These were the main attraction of the Poles to me, firepower and melee efficiency in one unit......excellent! Other infantry include levy musketeers and pike, as well as mercenary units of various types.

All in all there is much in a Polish army to attract the gamer, and these latest releases from Baccus certainly do justice to their subjects. As usual these models are far more than shapeless lumps of metal, and in some cases contain as much detail as I have seen in some 25mm figures. The winged hussars are particularly fine as can be seen in the enlarged scans. There is not much more I can say about these models but....recommended!
