Osprey- Battle Orders No2
Wellington's Army in the Peninsular 1809-14
by Stuart Reid
![]() |
I sometimes wonder just when Osprey will run out of idea regarding what military subject to cover next. But they keep coming up with those ideas, and the ideas are good ones as the recent Fortress Series has proved.
This latest series looks at the organisation of forces involved in various campaigns, and I have to say that from my point of view this is long overdue. Wargamers, in general, seem to have very little regard to historical organisations of their miniature forces beyond the flexible fiction of
published army lists.
Wellington's victorious army faced many changes in its various campaigns in the Peninsular, forced by the strictures of campaign, the reorganisation of units through losses and the rebuilding of divisions to include fresh troops.
The stern visage of Stuart Reid has greeted us from the inside covers of many Osprey books, though I think he could spare himself a smile over this one. I am an enthusiast of the Penisular War and I found the contents of this work not only useful, easy to follow, but also put together in an interesting manner, which is no small achievement as this could have been a very dry and uninteresting subject. The organisational charts are interspersed with a series of short biographies of the various Divisional and Brigade commanders. If you want to save yourself hours of research, this is the book for you. Well worth the money and highly recommended.
