The Eye of Terror

"The Despoiler comes forth once again, and he cannot be stopped by force of arms alone. It is his will that the stars be stained red with the blood of all who oppose him. An infinite horde of fiends, mutants and cacodaemons obey his command to devour Cadia alive. But he will not stop there. If our faith in the Emperor and our force of arms prove strong, the forces of Chaos can be driven back into hell. If we are found wanting,Humanity will fall."Lord Inquisitor Hephaestos Grudd of the Ordo MalleusAbaddon the Despoiler's 13th Black Crusade eclipses all that has gone before. Under the eye of his diabolic patrons he has finally united many of the warring factions of Chaos under one banner. The Eye of Terror, a vortex of warp-space so large it sprawls across half a Segmentum, has vomited forth an unstoppable stream of mutants, traitors, heretics and scum. At their head is Abaddon himself, leading legions of his elite Chaos Space Marines. Blood feuds that have lasted ten millennia have been put aside in the name of one common cause: the utter destruction of the Imperium"

I am no expert on Sci-Fi, still less am I in any way knowledgeable in the mysteries of Warhammer 40,000, hence the scenario description above. However I do recognise a good figure when I see one and the selection of models forwarded for review are well up to the usual excellent standard that has become the normal expectation from Games Workshop. The models are from the forces of the Imperial Guard, the first being Cadian shock troops.

As usual these plastic models are provided in kit form, cleanly cast in hard grey plastic. Although some may find this approach unnecessarily complicated, especially if all you want to do is get on with the painting, it does have the great advantage of allowing you to produce a huge range of individual poses from the limited parts available. And there is always plenty left over for your spare parts collection, so you are able to produce truly unique models in the future. The figures fit together easily and cleanly with the minimum of filling required and the glue tends to do this. The trickiest part is fixing the guys to their bases.

The Cadians are an efficient, brave , and determined force who guard the borders if the Imperium, and so as you would expect these are tough cookies armed with a wide range of deadly weapons, and body armour. This box provides you with 20 models for £15, which compares very well with the cost of metal equivalents. Also received, a Cadian Heavy weapons Squad. This sells for £8 and contains sufficient parts for three teams of two figures, which can be armed with a range of heavy weapons, including mortars, Lascannon, Heavy Bolter, Missile launcher and Autocannon. Again there are a number of spare part that can be added to you spares box for future use. Also included is a useful sheet of transfer with unit insignia, numbers etc.

Again the detail of the models is excellent, although fixing the weapons to their tripods was a bit of a pain. But the effort is worth it, as the models are very very good indeed.Just a quick tip, and I do not want to teach you to suck eggs, but make sure that you always give your figures, metal or plastic, a quick wash in a weak detergent wash, it ensures a good covering of your undercoat, which is very important given the fine detail on these models.

In metal I received a selection of Cadian Kasrkin Troopers. These are special forces units used to infiltrate enemy lines and for covert operations. Cast in white metal these models are flash and line free and reflect the high skills of the designers, yet again. The models retail in packs of 3 randomly selected poses at £6 per pack, which is not unusual for this type of model, but a little pricey compared with the plastic range.

If like me you are a dummy when it comes to the whole concept of Warhammer 40K, or if you are a dedicated player seeking more information then I suggest you browse through the excellent range of publications that accompany the range. The Eye of Terror Codex has been previously reviewed in the Forum, and now the Imperial Guard volume has been added to the library. Packed with excellent colour pics of superbly painted models, the history of the Imperial Guard, stunning artwork, special rules, painting and uniform details, this really is an essential buy for the Imperium player….. and their opponents (know your enemy). The book is in the normal glossy Softback, A4, format. 64 pages, I.S.B.N. 1-84154-410-8, and retails at £12.

All in all another excellent range from Games Workshop! For more info visit http://www.gamesworkshop.com/front.UK
