Baccus 6mm

Seven Years War

I was not sure why John asked me to review these figures!

I am a 28mm model collector, and I occasionally remove my armies from their display cases to play a really big game. I have used 15mm before and have not liked them, nothing wrong with them you understand, just not my bag. So I was not really expecting anything special from these little men.

I received a selection of Prussians and French to check out, and at first glance I was not too impressed. However when I took them out of their little plastic bags and looked closer I have to say that I was impressed by the amount of detail that has been engraved on so small a model.

The designer has even managed to imbue the individual figures on a stand with its own characteristics, which is amazing really. There is an amount of cleaning up that has to be done on some of the figures, not much really, but fiddly at times, and the thinness of 6mm muskets does mean that care needs to be taken. I found cleaning up the artillery wheels a real pain in the bum.

I though that painting these little blighters would be a nightmare. Especially after studying them under the glass, and was able to pick out better the fine detail on the uniforms. But when my partner checked them out she reckoned that they would be easy. So using the same approach she has on 300 GW Uruk Hai, she applied a black undercoat, and dry brushed the strips with a series of layers. After a couple of attempts she was able to get the style right, and painted 5 strips in 15 mins, including an ink wash.

The effect was very good, and I began to see why John have traded in his 15mm ACW and turned to 6mm. This has allowed him to create historical units on a 1/10 figure scale, quickly, and painted to a reasonable standard.

In all I was impressed by these models. They represent a very different approach to wargaming than my own, but they are incredibly well detailed for their scale, and en masse look superb. I am not ready yet to sell my 28mms, but may consider John's Marston Moor project.

For those finishing touches, Baccus provide a selection of 6mm scale flags that are equally impressive as the figures, so now there is no excuse for not choosing 6mm!

In all highly recommended for the gamer who likes big battles, or with limited space.
