Osprey

Tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy

By Michael Johnson: Illustrated by Jonathon Smith

This volume in the Osprey Men at Arms library is a bit of an oddity. Normally the series will concentrate on an army, troop type, or individual conflict covering in some detail a fairly limited period in time of aspect of the subject. This one actually gives a brief history of the Iroquois nations from its recorded beginnings in the seventeenth century to the current day.

The wars of the Mid-Eighteenth Century are covered, but in only six or so pages, so the detail is rather sketchy. The rest of the book goes into fare more detail regarding the Native American artistic, sociological and cultural heritage, But interesting as this is, and I found much to hold my attention in these pages, I feel that for the general wargamer or military buff this book may be of only limited interest.

That said with the usual excellent illustrations it is good value for money and should find itself onto the bookshelves of those interested in the history of American tribes.
