Warhammer Historical

  Alexander the Great

This latest volume in the Warhammer historical rules stable covers the rise of the kingdom of Macedon under King Philip, and the campaigns of  Alexander from his conquests in Greece and the near East, through his campaigns in Persia and India.

As we have come to expect from Games workshop publications these rules are excellent eye candy. From the exciting artwork on the cover, to the superb colour photographs of  a variety of wargame figure ranges, all consummately converted and painted. But if that was all these rules consisted of they would not be worth the hefty asking price, despite the useful painting tips!

However Jeff Jonas is an experienced wargamer, and real enthusiast for the subject. This comes across in the various sections. In particular I found the descriptions of the various campaigns well detailed and extremely readable. The details that are wanted by every wargamer, the little tips about tactics, and the impact of unusual weapons (such as anti-elephant carts) are all there and covered in detail.

Jeff takes many of the major battles of the period and provides us with a detailed army list for each side, and hints on the refighting of the action, complete with special rule additions. I am assured by my Ancient gaming pals that these list are extensive and should satisfy even the most pedantic gaming bore…..well we shall see!

There is one major omission from this product. The Bibliography is extensive, covering wargames source books for the ancient periods, specialist publications and periodicals. Details are given of wargame manufacturers, publishers and internet sources. However there is no mention of Wargames Forum, COME ON, we have been going longer than most online sources, and we do have a Worldwide following with thousands of visitors every week, so I reckon we have earned an honourable mention!

Alexander The Great is a supplement to Warhammer Ancient battles, so you do need to purchase the basic rules set in order to play out the scenarios included. But I reckon that this would be well worth the outlay, given the excellent contents of  this publication. Highly recommended.
