Games Workshop
How to Make Wargames Terrain
![]() |
Ok, I know that a number of wargamers have very little good to say about Games workshop, but what everyone has to admit is that GW have done more than anyone else to improve the standards of painting and terrain that are now the norm for gamers of all ages. My own boy not only wants his LOTR armies, but he also wants realistic and well made terrain for them to fight over, The GW approach has been to develop the whole package, and they have always encouraged excellence in terrain features as well as in the figures themselves.
This publication builds on this already succesful strategy by revealing a host of tips and shortcuts for producing professional standard terrain. Everything is covered in detail, and on a step by step basis, so the process can be undertaken fairly easily by everyone, and some of the projects are great for grown ups to undertake with their kids.
For those who already create their own terrain there are loads of ideas that may be new to you, and techniques that you may wish to experiment with. I particularly like thr inclusion of a variety of "Tip boxes", especially welcome being the health and safety advice.
I was particularly impressed by the section covering the construction of buildings. The Building menu includes the following stages and options:
Drawing the plan
Dimensions
The Shell
Making the house: stonework, wattle and daub, timber, timber, brick, corrugated iron, concrete, cloth.
Roofs: Tile sheet metal, pantile, thatch, timber, felt
Windows: suttered, leaded, masonry, gothic, etc etc
If, like me, you already own the previous GW publication on making terrain this latest volume is still worth the investment. It is a total rewrite, is a lot longer, contains far more information, ideas and tips and is excellent value for money. Highly recommended.
