Warhammer

Lizardmen

One of the problems about having a young wargamer in the house is that I often I no idea what he is talking about when he asks my advice about fantasy or science fiction issues. With historical games it is easy, I either sneak a peek in my fairly extensive library, or help Richard track down the information on the Internet. Fantasy though remains a mystery to me.

However those helpful, and commercially minded people at Games Workshop, have come rushing to my rescue with a range of volumes detailing just about everything you could want to know about the models in their ranges.

This particular book provided details of Lizardmen, and supports the range of models reviewed last month in the Forum. According to the author “The Lizardmen are an ancient race, created by the godlike beings known as the Old-Ones to be the guardians of the Warhammer World.”

The History of the Lizard races is excitingly recorded, supported by black and white artwork, and as always I cannot help but be impressed by the amount of detail that has been included in this created scenario. Taking a familiar historical background, the Toltec and Aztec empires of  Central America, the GW writer, Anthony Reynolds, has created a fascinating mythology and wargaming history.

There is a very useful section advising newcomers on building up their chosen army, starting small and building up steadily and concentrating on areas that suit your style of play. This section is gloriously illustrated in colour, presenting the full range of models available with core units, special figures like flying warriors mounted on Terradons, and rare units such as Stegadons and Salamanders.

Painting tips are included, which I found useful, and there is an extensive set of rule additions for Warhammer which include special rules for characters and  elite units. In all another example of the high quality and professionalism that has become Games Workshop’s norm.
