Review of American Civil War 15mm North and South Figures

I received two packs of figures from this manufacturer to review one command pack and one infantry pack.

1. First thoughts

The first pack opened was the command pack NSC4 £5.00 for 24 figures and I have to say that on first glance the figures are not pretty. The pack contains 24 figures of which 8 were so badly cast with missing limbs, weapons and shoddy bases they were un-useable. The biggest down side to this is all the standard bearers were in this group.

The next problem was the figures with detachable arms, of which some of the arms were damaged and un-usable. The arms have a lug to locate in a hole on the arm but some figures did not have a hole and after trimming of lugs and trying to remove the super glue from fingers and tweezers and get them stuck to the figure I gave up after ½ an hour having managed to stick two arms on successfully. Thus I was left with 11 usable figures.

The second pack was the infantry pack NSC2 48 figures for £9.00 these were much better than the first pack only 8 rejects in total. There were a lot of visible mould lines on these, but they had all the right bits. There are 2 variations of infantry in kepi and 1 in slouch hat.

The figures in general seem a little thin and skinny looking and the muskets seem out of proportion due to this. Overall there does not appear to be a lot of definition in the cut of the figures for cross belts and other equipments. Each figure stands 20mm from toe to top of hat.

These models could be improved by casting the figures in a variety of poses without detachable arms; the 15mm scale makes this very fiddly trying to glue bits on. Quality control obviously needs improving if 8 figures out of 24 are useless straight from the bag in the command pack and 8 out of 48 in the infantry pack. After all it’s your money you’re spending.

2. Painting

I started these figures with a grey undercoat and saw a little improvement in the figures not much to work with but there is some cut in the uniforms. The waist sashes and cross belts are not particularly well cut and this does make hard work of painting these figures.

The non-existence of real details makes hard work of making these figures even look half decent.

From the opening of the first pack to finishing painting these figures, they have made the process an effort, I enjoy painting but not these and was glad to finish.
