Bob Connor

It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Bob Connor of Tabletop Games. Bob was one of the real characters in the wargames business and he will be sadly missed.

The funeral is to be held at Winthorpe Church just outside of Skegness on Monday 28th July at 2.30pm. Any wargamers who are able to attend will be very welcome. We have expressed our condolences to Bobs family, and to Mark Pemberton who is picking up the reins at Tabletop Games.

Obviously there may be a little delay in processing any outstanding orders.

It was with a sense of shock as well as sorry that I received the above message posted on the yahoo wargames group site. I have known Bob for what seems like a lifetime, and he was one of the friendliest, helpful and truly nice guys I have ever met.

With the Tabletop Games stall Bob was a fixture at the vast majority of shows, both large and small up and down the country through the seventies and eighties. I asked him why he attended so many shows, especially when his takings at a number of them would not have covered his costs. His response was typical, first and foremost that show takings were only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to sales, and he thought that the follow up mail order more than made his investment of time worthwhile. He also said that encouraging clubs in presenting shows helped develop the hobby and that it was a role of the trader to be part of that process.

But Bob also encouraged rule writers, and was responsible for a whole range of products that challenged the WRG stranglehold on rules, and which were innovative and fun to use. Pony Wars, Tercio, Lance, Challenger, Sound Of the Guns, Armada, The Shock of Impact, Laserburn and Soldiers of the Queen the list just goes on and on. And it is not simply the rules themselves, but the influence they had on other writers and gamers in developing their own rules and army lists.

Bob was a great bloke, who has had a great influence of the development of wargaming and the whole hobby is going to be a lot poorer with his loss
