Napoleons Road to Glory

J David Markham

Of all the characters in history the little Corsican has probably had more volumes dedicated to his life ,campaigns and achievements than any other individual. Which is fair enough I suppose given the impact that he had on the World, and Europe in particular.

But this creates some difficulties for the historian. What new light can they shed on the man's greatness, or indeed on his weaknesses. Is there anything, anything at all that has not already been written. Possibly not, and certainly I found very little in Markham's effort that was new to me, and I do not regard myself as an expert on the Napoleonic period by any means.

However what I did find was a eminently readable account of the life of Bonaparte, that places in an understandable context the interaction of a host of characters and personalities that impact on the rule of the great man. I particularly enjoyed reading about the various members of Napoleon's family and their attempts to prove worthy of their blood relation. A big plus about this volume is the extensive bibliography and source reference guiding the reader to additional study.

If you are looking for a sound background history to the Napoleonic Wars of have a relation about to undertake a general study of the period I would highly recommend this volume. However if you are wanting to study the campaigns and individual battles in any detail this is not the book for you.
