Stargrunt from Ground Zero Games

15mm Sci-Fi
Review by Steve Crofts

Pack: - HS 1

First Thoughts

Opening the packet and taking out the figures, (8 of them), I was surprised at the amount of detail on them all. As I’m not exactly a Sci-Fi buff my knowledge on what exactly the weapons are, is extremely limited, so I’ll stick to, big gun, little gun, pistol and bazooka type rocket thingy! All the figures look well in the proportions department, only one of the figures has a slight problem and that is the size of his head, it is a little large for me, but hey the figures are nice, so I think this small misdemeanor can be forgiven! Details on the figures include a Flak jacket and helmet as well as belt webbing around their waists; these are all very well cut.

Minor details are also well defined and cut so that they stand slightly proud; these include, shoulder patches and Trouser pockets.

I must say that I was surprised at the amount of work one can do on such a “small” figure, (like I’ve said before somewhere, all my painting is usually 25mil or larger), but that didn’t stop me from dabbling with the finer bits on these miniatures.

The faces are excellent to work with and full of _expression, also on this note, the hands, all are clearly cut and well defined.

Flash

Not a lot at all in fact I’ll go so far as to say, their wasn’t any!

Mould lines on the other hand were apparent on a few of the figures, this was on the whole pretty easy to remove, but, a couple did take a while to sort out, this was due to the size of the figures and that I didn’t want to damage the casting or detail for that matter, it was fiddly at times but well worth the little bit of clean up.

Painting

This was surprisingly easy; I had an excellent time painting them, thoroughly enjoyable! This was in part due to the time that the sculptor had spent creating the castings, the detail works with you and it brings out the quality of the figures.

As I said earlier; I’m not a Sci-Fi buff so if they are supposed to be a different colour from what I’ve painted them I do apologise.

I felt that they looked a bit like a S.W.A.T. team so that’s where I got the idea for the colour scheme.

Overall

A nice set of figures that are worth purchasing, they are very detailed and nice to paint.

Pack No: N 1

First Thoughts

These figures resemble those guys that run around blasting aliens in the game Halo! The figures, (8 of them), are all well cut and proportionate. I found their were very little flash on these figures, although a couple of the figures did have mould lines. The hardest part of the removal was upon the tops of the helmets, I was trying to keep the shape and not lose any of the detail, but that said the job was not difficult and went on without incident. I must say in defense of these figures that these minor details did not detract me in any way about my thoughts of the miniatures, Stunning! Is the word I would use! Once they were undercoated the detail is even better as with the grey primer that I use really does let you see if the figure is detailed or not, and these were well detailed, just to name one of the details, ventilation slots in the helmets. Body armor and weapons, as well as backpacks, have all been beautifully depicted and you can have a great time painting them up, I did!

Painting

As I said above these figures are very nice to paint, the job is made very easy and picking out detail is better than I thought it would be, given the size of the figures and what I'm used to painting, Even the weapons were so full of detail that again it made the job easy.

Overall

A very nice set of figures that will grace anyone's table and look great, Well Done!

Pack:- I F 02, Islamic Federation

First Thoughts

A bit chunky with slightly large heads on a couple of them.

Saying that they are in Army issue combat gear, so that could explain the slight chunkiness. If you look at the photo’s you’ll see what I mean.

The heads on a couple of the figures look a little large for me, which is something I can’t understand really, as other figures from this company I have reviewed have all been well proportioned. The only thing that I can think of to explain this is, that another sculptor has designed these?

After the small criticisms, on the whole the figures are pretty good, folds, creases, webbing ect… are all well depicted and cut.

The figures are all wearing Flak Jackets and small armor plates on their shoulders and what look like Dr Martin boots!

Painting

Not a hard job really, the detail does a lot of the work, this small factor does a lot for a figure and helps during painting to do the figure justice. I not fully satisfied with my results though and feel that I could have done better, but I’m re- learning how to paint these smaller miniatures.

Most of the figures in the pack have beards all that is except one, Whom in my opinion resembles none other than Saddam Hussain!

All of the miniatures have automatic weapons except one who is armed with a bazooka type rocket launcher thingy, these all were very easy to paint and again the detail on the weapons aided this job.

Overall

The pack is of a decent quality, although I still think the figures heads are a little too large, but saying that the figures do paint up very nicely and you don’t have to try too hard to get good results, and so could be forgiven for this slight problem.

Not a bad set of figures altogether.

Improvements

Well my suggestion would be to take a closer look at the heads, they do look a little large in comparison to the bodies, or is it me?, what do you think?
