First Thoughts

Now these look like they might be fun to paint!

Although on closer inspection I was somewhat a little bemused as for this feeling I shall now explain…

The figures are very well detailed in some areas and strangely not others, which is a shame really as this would have enhanced the figures well and made them into superb figures and not just good.

Faces, hands and feet are well cut and depicted, great so far, then I came to look at the arms and legs, don’t get me wrong these are well proportioned but, and here’s where the detail comes in, the muscle structure and shape is lacking on the arms and legs of the figures, this is a great shame I think, as the rest of the work on these figures is of a high standard. The problem I think is that although the limbs would have looked good on a smaller scale figure, on a figure this scale the muscle structure is part of the whole make up of the figure.

I don’t want to sound nasty about this point but if these details are corrected I feel that Irregular could have a winner on their hands.

It is obvious at a glance if you look at the detail on the helmets faces hands etc.. the pains that the sculptor has gone to, so why not spend the added time perfecting the muscle structure of the limbs? Pity really.

The figures are open handed, (right hand), and carry a large shield in there left. I wasn’t given any weapons with these figures so I am taking it for granted that you make your own or buy those separate, (correct me John if I’m wrong on this point *You aren't! Ed*).

Armour is well cut and shaped and does hold a few details on it.

Each of the figures also has a sheathed sword at the left hip.

Cloaks and the “skirt” are also well defined and shaped and there are plenty of creases to work with for shading.

Although there are some details missing as aforementioned, don’t let this put you off as, you can paint some of the detail in, it does make the job of painting take longer, (unfortunately as I’m running a tight schedule at the moment I couldn’t spend this extra time, although I do think I’ll go back at a later date and work on the limbs some more), but I certainly think it would be a worthwhile exercise doing so.

Flash

Yes their was some present in the usual places, corners, between the legs ect.. but this was only thin and didn’t take much removal.

Mould lines, again these were present but apart from a couple which had them on the shields, (this did take some care to remove as I didn’t want to distort the shape of the shields), this too proved no problem to remedy.

Painting

It may sound daft as these are large scale figures, but care is needed, and rushing only spoils them, Time and care will benefit and excellent results should be assured.

Also, (painting tip coming up), as they are such large scale figures, more build up shading coats are needed to add depth to your colours especially the areas of the shields and cloaks, this has it’s own rewards and you will find that these figures are a nice challenge.

All in all the figures are very nice to paint and definitely not a chore!

Conclusion

As mentioned in my first thoughts it is a shame that the figures are let down by the muscle features, as the rest of the models are excellent.

Work on this area Irregular and I am sure you will be onto a winner.

Overall rating I’d give them a good, sort the muscles out and I’d say at a guess they’d be superb.

80p a figure you can’t go wrong!

Keep up the good work.
