REVIEW BY STEVE CROFTS
First Thoughts
What’s this something for the bits box? I thought I was supposed to be reviewing figures not bits!
I opened the packet and emptied out the contents.
Low and behold my first thoughts were taken back! There in plain view were the figures, surrounded by loads and I mean loads of extras!
Cool! Each figure was sculptured to a very good standard, heads are missing, but those come later in the review, and the ,(What I call), basic webbing pouches surrounding the figure.
The movement and character of each pose is very good as is the re-creation of the uniform bulky looking and baggy.
All creases and folds are well depicted but do not over emphasized as to spoil the overall look.
Weapons are also well detailed and proportionate to the scale of the figures.
Flak jackets are worn by all the members of the pack.
Extras
As mentioned above a lot of extras came with these figures giving multiple choices as to how you wish to depict these special forces guys, there are three main head type variants, but within these are a choice of moustache or no moustache giving even more variation.
Each of the head variants have either no hat, floppy bush hat or , (what I call), Benny hat, (Cap comforter). I take you are now beginning to see the variety of changes possible just with the heads! Also in the additions are two choices of back pack, the large 60 odd lb yomping backpack or a smaller “light kit” backpack, there are 4 of each, of these in the set. Last but not least is a hand held rocket launcher, which is very nicely detailed and again very proportionate to the figures.
Flash
Not a lot of flash on the models at all it was Very light as far as this is concerned and no major problems were incurred during the removal. Mould lines were slightly present but again not major problems to remove.
Painting
The heads of the figures needed to be chosen and attached to the figures first as did my choice of kit bags.
The heads do have a long “neck” which does need to be trimmed down with a good pair of metal cutters and then leveled with either a modelling scalpel or a good file.
Gluing can be a little tricky and care taken, I found normal superglue a pain so I decided to try a different approach and used a superglue gel, this worked much better, and was also used to attach the kitbags where required.
Painting was easy at first but with successive build up of the DP it got a little disorienting, this is something I like to take my time on as I feel that if you rush this type of Cammo you can spoil the overall looks.
Faces and facial detail is of a good quality and pretty well cut, as are the hands of the figures, some designers don't put much detail into the hands and fingers and daft as it sounds spoils the “look” and effect of a miniature, let me assure you these miniatures have a fair amount that is more than adequate for the job, ok there are no finger nails depicted but I don't do fingernails!
Overall the painting hides the details of the figures, (It camouflages them!), so I would advise a real close inspection, it’s worth it!
Final Thoughts
Brookes Miniatures are a fairly new company to be honest and have been trading a couple of years, their range of modern miniatures are at the moment all to do with the war on terrorism in Afghanistan, They do have a website and it is worth a visit, it not only includes a full listing of their miniatures, but also colour photographs of the miniatures in combat!
I will definitely be keeping an eye on this companies range and I hope once this is completed other ranges will be available.
Keep up the good work and all I can say as a final word is that I will expect high quality like this every time!
Well done on a lovely range of figures!
