Napoleon's Imperial Headquarters
(1) Organization and Personnel
(2) On Campaign

By Ronald Pawly Illustrations by Patrice Courcelle
The problem with wargamers is that they often have little conception of the importance of good staffwork and support organisations to the success of an army. And I would argue that much of Napoleons success was the result of the brilliance of his Headquarters staff in particular Berthier.
These slim volumes give a brief but fascinating insight into the complex work and enormous scope of the Imperial headquarters and the impact of this organisation in the success of French arms. However this work just scratches the surface of its subject, as the author himself states when looking at the Army Administration " To describe this aspect of the army in any detail would require a book of its own".
Even so the author has provided us with an excellent introduction to this complex and intriguing subject. The clear narrative supported by a host of contemporary illustrations and the outstanding artwork of Patrice Courcelle. These twin volumes are highly recommended and bound to be of interest to any serious Napoleonic wargamer.
