This book is published by Osprey as part of their 'Men at Arms' series .It is the first of three volumes intended to cover the German Army throughout the 1st World War. Although a short book of only 48 pages it contains a wealth of detail. It would probably not be used by many for a cosy bedtime read however that should take nothing away from its use as an excellent short work of reference.
The book is divided into 3 distinct parts.
Firstly Dr Thomas introduces the reader to the formation of the German Federation, the organisation and the command structure of the army prior to 1914.He then briefly describes German strategy in 1914-15, and gives a short chronological account of the opening phases of the war on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
The second part of the book describes the dress and equipment of the various branches of the army in 1914-15.If you thrive on detail you will love this section of the book. As you might expect descriptions include the General Staff, Infantry, Artillery and Cavalry. However smaller branches of the Army also receive attention. If you want to know how the German Army's Airship Corps of 1914 were organised and equipped look no further!
The Third part of the book describes the 24 coloured plates by Gerry Embleton.
Following its usual formula in this series Osprey have provided a series of detailed coloured illustrations supplemented by some excellent black and white contemporary photographs to support the text. The book also includes a number of factual tables the most comprehensive of which sets out the order of battle on each front in 1914-15, down to Regimental level.
The brevity of this book does not deter from its purpose of providing a cheap and accessible work of reference, which will appeal to a broad audience of readers with more than a passing interest in the 1st World War.
There is a short index but no bibliography or suggestion for further reading, which is rather a shame.
