Osprey
The Austro Hungarian Forces In World War I (vol 2)
By Peter Jung: Illustrated by Darko Pavlovic
![]() |
This is the welcome second part of the volume covering the much maligned Austro-Hungarian forces of the First World War. Often put in the shade by their German allies, the Austro Hungarian were engaged in some extremely heavy fighting especially against the Russians at the start of the war, who were at that time motivated and trained with a huge pool of reserves, and the Italians and other Allied units in the extreme conditions of the Alps. I was not aware though that Austro Hungarians took part in the Palestine campaign until I read this volume.
The second part of the volume contains details of the army following the reorganisations of 1917/18, and then goes on to cover the historical background in brief detail. Weapons and equipment are covered, and changes in the standard uniforms and introduction of steel helmets are detailed.
The units covered are the unusual ones, including stormtroops, mountain troops (who were so vital to success on the Italian Front), armoured cars, and even the chaplain service. Details are also included of the units that fought on the Western Front.
The text is supported by a host of contemporary black and white photographs (check out the armoured cars), and of course the Osprey trade mark colour plates, this time from Darko Pavlovic, who certainly has an eye for detail.
The Austro Hungarians may not the first army of choice for most gamers, but they are certainly interesting. These books will be of interest for any WW1 gamer as well as those with a more specific interest in the Austro Hungarians.
