Battle for the West

1940-1945

World War II Scenarios Volume 1

By Dave Brown Pub: Partizan Press

This short publication from Partizan deserves to gain a wide circulation. Although designed to support their own inhouse World War 2 rules, Battlegroup Panzer Grenadier ( and indeed includes a supplement with advanced rule additions), the scenarios are not just limited to that format.

I have found that with modern warfare in particular the search for balanced and interesting scenarios to play out in an evening can be a pretty gruelling. This volume takes 11 historical actions provides all the details you need to transfer them to the tabletop.

Each scenario includes Historical background, mission objectives, Orders of Battle, Deployment details, special rules, and terrain. Most games are suited for a 6x4 table, which is good news for the home based gamer.

The scenarios themselves cover action in Franch and Belgium and I played through the Villers-Bocage scenario of 1944. This is the famous, or rather infamous action in which the Ace German Tanker Obersturmfurher Whittman led his company of Tigers to a surprise attack on a British armoured column.

The balance of the scenario is pretty good, and the objectives are pretty stretching, forcing the German player to aggressive head on action, while the British have stacks of elements, but all of vastly inferior quality. I would like to sayy this gave us an evenings fun, but it didn’t, as it was all over in an hour. But that is more to do with dice rolls on move 1 than the scenario.

For World War 2 gamers definitely worth a look see.
