Osprey: Campaign 123
Auldearn 1645
By Stuart Reid: Illustrated by Gerry Embelton
![]() |
I remember arguing with Stuart the details of Montrose's Scottish campaigns round a
re-enactment campfire over 20 years ago. Since then he has gone on to be one of Scotland and the UK's best known military historians, and I have ended up editing Wargames Forum, so maybe I best doff my cap to him and ruefully give more weight to his interpretation of the facts than i did so many years ago. And to be honest, that is easy! Although bearing the title of Auldearn, this volume contains a potted history of the Campaigns of Montrose during the First Civil War, so you are getting more for your money, which has to be a good thing.
As usual with Stuarts work the account of the campaign is very readable, and contains a wealth of minor detail, that will prove a joy to the wargamer. The many photographs and line drawings, both in colour and black and white, hold a multiplicity of images that are new to me, including a number of standards that I have not seen illustrated elsewhere.
The original illustrations, from Gerry Embelton perhaps the best known of popular military artists, are excellent, full of fine detail and character that not only provide very satisfying eye candy, but are sure to provide inspiration for those thinking of building armies of the period.
Complete with Orders of Battle, and a handy guide to visiting the battlefields today this volume is a highly recommended purchase and should find a home on many bookshelves.
