Osprey: Campaign 122
Tannenburg 1410
By Stephen Turnbull: Illustrated by Richard Hook

It is still a surprise for some that Stephen, a World acknowledged, expert on the Samurai and Japanese mythology and religion, should also have a growing reputation in the area of medieval Europe. His works on the Knight, and articles such as the recent History Today feature on the Hussites illustrate the enthusiasm and depth of academic endeavour that stood him in such good stead in his publications on Japan.
The latest Osprey release, in the Campaigns Series, will only enhance Stephen's reputation. The subject is the crusading Teutonic Order and its disastrous clash with a Polish and Lithuanian Alliance. The Teutonic Knights themselves are an organisation that have a fascination for many wargamers. Their armies consisting of heavily armoured knights, regular
foot soldiers, levies, mercenaries and crusader knights are a potentially potent mixture on the battlefield,
In this publication Stephen tells the story of the campaign in great detail, supporting the text with a host of illustrations, ranging from photographs in the authors own collection, to contemporary
wall paintings, later woodcuts, and later paintings that emphasise the heroic and romantic elements of the story. The colour plates by Richard Hook are excellent, presenting an enormous amount of detail of arms and armour, and even more importantly for the gamer and modeller. lots and lots of examples of heraldic devices and banners.
I have already read this book twice, and enjoyed it both times, revelling in the detail. As you can guess I am highly recommending this volume as a welcome addition to any library, and as essential reading for any medieval enthusiast.
