Eastern Cape Championships Results

The South African Wargames Union held its annual Eastern Cape Championships on the weekend of 24 and 25 August 2002 at the Algoa Shell Hole, 8th Avenue, Walmer, Port Elizabeth.

Thanks to the press coverage from the PE Express, the Eastern Cape Herald and Die Burger, the tournament enjoyed unprecedented spectator support with many more individuals becoming interested in the game and affiliating there and then!

The tournament was probably one of the most exciting to date with four players who were chasing the top three positions, namely; Eugene Burger, Rudi Harmse, Liezl Harmse, and Gary Waterworth.

Rudi Harmse managed to successfully fight his way into third place. Due to his having finished in the top 50% in both the South African National Championships and in the Eastern Cape Championships he was awarded Eastern Cape Provincial Colours. Rudi is the first player in the Eastern Cape to ever receive Provincial Colours for Ancients figure gaming in the Eastern Cape.

Thembinkosi Hambiyane of Johannesburg dominated the Draughts and comfortably took the title away from Lubabalo Kondlo.

The final top three positions were:

ANCIENTS - Premier

1st Eugene Burger MG     106 points
2nd Gary Waterworth OE 74 points
3rd Rudi Harmse EPWG  65 points

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD: CLAUDE LE ROUX (EPWG)
