Gallows Thief

The latest story from one of our favourite writers to hit paperback is The Gallows thief. For those of us looking for a military based tale this may be a disappointment. The story is set in 1817 and our hero is Rider Sandman who is a gentleman fallen on hard times who is contracted by the Home secretary to rubber stamp the sentence to hang passed on an apparently murderous artist.
The story is quite interesting. As usual the period detail is unusually well researched and presented in great detail, maybe too much lingering detail, as at times it interferes with the pace of the tale. Still no matter the story is intriguing enough with enough plot twists to keep most of us guessing.
Fans of Sharpe however will be seeking similarities and links to their hero. Well as previously stated he is a gentleman, he is also a veteran on the Peninsular and Waterloo, having commanded a company of Grenadiers. He is a pretty well known and respected soldier, who is a ferocious fighter with a burning temper. Sound familiar? All he really needs is a sidekick, perhaps a rough diamond ex-noncom and the set would be complete!
Gallows Thief is an interesting and painless read, that follows a successful formula. But if you are seeking some large scale bloodletting then the next part of the Grail Quest, Vagabond, is due out in October.
